SOC 2 Type II with zero audit exceptions.
SCI built and operated BackEngine's compliance program so its team could satisfy enterprise security expectations without turning compliance into another engineering project.
The outcome
Enterprise-ready assurance without draining the product team.
BackEngine needed to demonstrate that its security program could meet the expectations of enterprise customers. SCI embedded with the company, built the compliance program, implemented the necessary controls across its AWS environment, and coordinated the SOC 2 examination from readiness through completion.

The challenge
Trust was becoming part of every enterprise conversation.
BackEngine connects and organizes customer information from emails, calls, CRMs, and other business systems so companies can use that information securely with AI. That made security, privacy, and access control central to the product and to the buying process.
The company needed a credible SOC 2 Type II program, but its engineers still needed to stay focused on customers and product development. Passing tasks back and forth between consultants, auditors, and the internal team would only create more work.
BackEngine needed a partner that could take responsibility for the program and also work directly inside its technical environment.
What SCI owned
An operating compliance team, not another checklist.
SCI managed the engagement through its Embedded Compliance service, combining program leadership, hands-on engineering, recurring control operation, and audit coordination.
- Completed the SOC 2 gap assessment and translated the findings into a practical implementation plan.
- Developed and tailored policies around BackEngine's actual systems, personnel, and operating practices.
- Implemented and validated security controls across AWS services, including ECS, RDS PostgreSQL, ElastiCache Redis, and S3.
- Organized evidence collection, recurring monitoring, vendor risk activities, and control ownership.
- Prepared the team for the examination and coordinated evidence requests with the independent auditor.
- Created a reusable compliance foundation that could support additional customer and regulatory requirements.
Technical implementation
Controls built around the way BackEngine actually operates.
The work extended beyond policies and evidence uploads. SCI worked across BackEngine's AWS environment and operating processes so the controls reflected the real architecture and could be maintained after the first examination.
AWS infrastructure
Security requirements were mapped to the production environment across container workloads, databases, caching, storage, logging, and supporting services.
Data protection
The program documented and validated protections for sensitive customer information, including encryption, access restrictions, and production-data isolation.
Operational ownership
SCI established the recurring activities, evidence expectations, and responsibilities needed to keep the program operating throughout the audit period.
Audit coordination
SCI organized the evidence package, responded to auditor requests, and kept the examination moving without making BackEngine manage every handoff.
The result
A clean SOC 2 report and a foundation for what came next.
BackEngine completed its SOC 2 Type II examination with zero exceptions. The audit period ran from September 18, 2024 through March 18, 2025.
More importantly, the work produced a compliance program BackEngine could continue using as the business grew. When HIPAA became the next requirement, SCI extended the existing program within two weeks instead of beginning another disconnected project.
BackEngine gained the independent assurance enterprise buyers expected while its internal team remained focused on building the product and serving customers.
